A blog about non-fiction books that address societal issues and problems
If not for a book that I read a few years ago called Becoming Who You Are: Insights on the True Self from Thomas Merton and Other Saints, I don’t think that I would have really known who Pope Francis was talking about when he mentioned Thomas Merton in his speech to Congress. (Despite the title, Thomas Merton was, of course, not a saint.) The great Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh also mentions his friendship with Merton in some of his books. In the following 10 minute video, which was made last February in honor of the day that would have been Thomas Merton’s 100th birthday, Bishop Robert Barron offers an introduction to this historical figure mentioned by Pope Francis in his speech. Among other things, Thomas Merton wrote The Seven Storey Mountain: An Autobiography of Faith.
